Help Us Help Our Neighborhood Schools

Claver House has been partnering with St. Louis public schools in the Ville since 2016. Today there remain but two: Sumner High School, the first school for African Americans west of the Mississippi and one with a proud tradition, and Hickey Elementary, a school for pre-K through 6th grade students. The schools continue dealing with systemic issues of poverty. With both school facilities suffering damage from the May tornado, students and staff are temporarily merging with nearby schools. This does not, however, preclude the need for support.

A year ago we asked the two schools if there were greater needs. Both replied almost identically. Students fail to attend school because they lack personal hygiene items, a hair cut, or clothing items. Many who attend school are hungry and have no access to healthy snacks. These are areas where we can help. Hence Claver House is now collecting food and hygiene supplies, vouchers, and other items for distribution throughout the school year to needy students at our two Ville public schools. Below is a shopping list of needed items.
